Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy

This procedure involves resection of about 85-90% of the stomach, converting the stomach from a large bag into a narrow tube, thus decreasing the amount of food that can be eaten.

In many people this procedure also has the effect of reducing appetite. It may be suitable for patients for whom other diet modification techniques have not worked, although potential patients should discuss their needs with their primary care doctor first. You should feel full after eating only about a cup of food.

This procedure takes about 30-40 minutes. It is a laproscopic (‘key-hole’) procedure, which means that the incision is relatively small, meaning there is a slightly reduced recovery time and less scarring in many cases.

Since a large part of the stomach is permanently removed, this procedure is irreversible. However, it is important to avoid overeating and stretching the new stomach. You will have plenty of opportunity to discuss aftercare for gastric sleeve surgery when you come in to our Gold Coast clinic for your consultation/s.

A sleeve gastrectomy provides extremely good rapid weight loss. We expect to see about 70-75% excess weight loss. This means if your starting BMI is about 45 and average height, your weight could drop from 135kg down to about 90kg.
